Art Vision

Our aim for our Art curriculum is to inspire our children to be as creative as they possibly can. We learn about different artists from all over the world and use their pieces of art work as inspiration for our own.

Through looking at different artists, it helps the children realise that everybody sees art in a different way therefore everybody can achieve in art. The children are taught many different processes throughout their learning so see art as a journey not just a finished product.

Curriculum Overview

Art is taught to all children within our school from Nursery to Year 2. Art is an inclusive subject and all children take part in our Art lessons. Within our lessons children are given opportunities to work on projects in 2 and 3 dimensions and in different scales. Children have access to a variety of medium including sketching pencils, drawing pens, chalk, charcoal and different types of paint. When lessons are planned, they are planned in a logical sequence to ensure that prior learning is always being built upon.

In our Nursery, children are introduced to different colours, drawing simple shapes to represent different objects for example a circle as a face, learning how colours can be mixed together to create a new colour and how different types of material can be stuck on to paper to create a collage. In our Reception classes children build upon this learning and begin to add features to the shapes to make them look more like the object it is representing, using resources for a purpose and are introduced to mew medium such as clay to make 3d pieces of work.

In KS1, children build on the skills taught in the Early Years. They are introduced to a wider range of medium and shown how to use these correctly. Children look at existing pieces of art work and share opinions on it. Children use these pieces to inspire themselves to make their own original pieces. Throughout our lessons, key vocabulary is taught to the children and builds on throughout the Key Stage.

Each term we have a whole school Art Day where a theme is set for each class to produce pieces of work that are then displayed in the hall. In recent Art Days the themes have been those such as Harvest, Christmas, flowers and wings. This day provides children the chance to work collaboratively as a class but also a whole year group.

News and Events

Last year we had our first Art Afternoon where parents were invited to come into school and work with their child to produce art work together. The afternoon was a huge success and more events like this will be planned!

Home Learning Ideas

Visit local art exhibitions and art galleries. We are lucky to be so close to London where there are lots of art galleries to visit. Your child may like to make their own sketches while they are there or back at home they could try to recreate what they have seen.
Take a trip to the local park or gardens. What can your child see? Ask them to make a sketch. Bring it in to class to share with the rest of us.
